The previous vocalist of Trivium quit the band shortly after Heafy's joining and Matt assumed responsibility for vocals and the majority of the song writing. Matt Heafy's debut with Trivium included his compositions of Fugue, Demon, Requiem, and Sworn. He has also composed the songs and lyrics for their Ember to Inferno album and most of the Ascendancy album. Rumor has it that each band member will have an equal involvement in the writing of the album The Crusade. As for the new album, Heafy states "People are going shake their heads in amazement and wonder 'How did they do that?'"
At the young age of 19, Heafy has had considerable success for a young artist. Trivium has garnered a large following in Europe and they are now trying to achieve the same success in North America.
Matt’s favorite bands include Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth, In Flames, Rammstein and Iron Maiden although Trivium's music tends to lean further towards the more modern day metalcore and melodic metal sounds of Unearth and to some extent, Avenged Sevenfold.
Matthew’s success did not come easily. He claims to have practiced eight hours a day to learn guitar when he was 12 years old, right through until present day. Heafy confesses that his next project would be to start a black metal band, but not for some time. Currently he is hard at work with Trivium.
Matt uses his Dean Signature Matt Heafy MKH 7 string.
